Why was this book written?
The primary reason Colossians was
written is to confront the heresy about Jesus and who he is. Paul
spends almost an entire chapter teaching them about Jesus and who he
is. He tells them that God lives in him, that he was raised from the
dead, that Jesus defeated all the powers of evil and that same Jesus
lives inside of them (1:15, 272:6, 9, 12, 15, 17). Paul wants them
to get that Jesus has paid it all and that their hope in salvation is
secure.
What is the main idea of this book?
The main idea in Colossians is
that Jesus has paid the price for their sins. They don't have to
continue trying to separate unclean or clean, but they are free to
live for God by the power of Christ in them. It doesn't help to say
don't do this or don't do that when the real issue is their hearts
(2:17-18). Jesus has done it all (2:14). Now they are to live with
that truth and with that power to set their minds on things above.
They have power over their sin and over their fleshly bodies because
of the power of the cross (2:20).
